Wisdom Tooth Removal Recovery – 10 Frequently Asked Questions

Wisdom tooth removal is a common oral surgical procedure. Most patients recover quickly when they follow their dentist’s post-operative instructions. Here are answers to the most common questions about recovery after wisdom tooth extraction.

1. How long does recovery take?

Most patients recover within 3 to 7 days after a simple wisdom tooth extraction. Surgical removal of impacted wisdom teeth may take 1 to 2 weeks for complete healing. The gum tissue usually heals within a few weeks, while the underlying bone continues to heal over the following months.

2. What foods can I eat after surgery?

For the first few days, choose soft, easy-to-chew foods such as:

  • Yogurt
  • Ice cream
  • Smoothies (without using a straw)
  • Mashed potatoes
  • Soft rice
  • Khichdi
  • Soup (lukewarm)
  • Scrambled eggs
  • Oatmeal
  • Soft fruits like bananas

Avoid hot, spicy, crunchy, hard, and sticky foods until your dentist advises otherwise.

3. How can I reduce swelling?

Swelling is normal and usually peaks within the first 48 hours. You can reduce swelling by:

  • Applying an ice pack to the outside of your cheek for 15–20 minutes on and 15–20 minutes off during the first 24–48 hours.
  • Taking prescribed medications as directed.
  • Keeping your head elevated while resting.
  • Drinking plenty of fluids and getting adequate rest.

4. When can I return to work?

Most patients can return to work or school within 1 to 3 days, depending on the difficulty of the extraction and the nature of their job. If your work involves heavy physical activity, your dentist may recommend taking additional time off to promote healing.

5. What activities should I avoid?

For the first few days after surgery, avoid:

  • Heavy exercise or strenuous activities
  • Smoking or tobacco use
  • Drinking alcohol
  • Using straws
  • Spitting forcefully
  • Touching the extraction site with your fingers or tongue

These activities can interfere with blood clot formation and delay healing.

6. What are signs of infection?

Contact your dentist if you experience:

  • Increasing pain after several days
  • Persistent or worsening swelling
  • Fever or chills
  • Pus or foul-tasting discharge from the extraction site
  • Difficulty opening your mouth
  • Persistent bad breath
  • Swollen lymph nodes

Early treatment helps prevent complications.

7. How should I clean my mouth?

Do not rinse your mouth vigorously during the first 24 hours. After that:

  • Gently rinse with warm salt water 3–4 times daily, especially after meals.
  • Brush your other teeth carefully, avoiding the extraction area.
  • Maintain good oral hygiene without disturbing the blood clot.

Follow any additional cleaning instructions provided by your dentist.

8. What is dry socket?

Dry socket (alveolar osteitis) occurs when the protective blood clot at the extraction site is lost or dissolves too early, exposing the underlying bone and nerves. It usually develops 2–5 days after extraction and causes severe, throbbing pain that may radiate to the ear or jaw. Smoking, using straws, or vigorous rinsing can increase the risk. Prompt dental treatment provides relief and promotes healing.

9. When can I brush normally?

You can usually brush your teeth the day after surgery, but be very gentle around the extraction site. Normal brushing can gradually resume as healing progresses, usually within several days. Always avoid disturbing the healing socket.

10. When should I visit my dentist again?

Your dentist may schedule a follow-up visit about one week after surgery, especially if stitches need to be removed or healing needs to be evaluated. You should also return immediately if you develop severe pain, persistent bleeding, swelling, fever, or any other unusual symptoms.
